History

The Northern New Jersey Chapter of the Victorian Society in America was founded in 1975 as part of the only national non-profit organization committed to historic preservation, protection, understanding, education and enjoyment of our 19th century heritage. The chapter received its charter in November 1976. The New Jersey chapter is one of many in the United States, with the national headquarters located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The chapter started with twenty-eight founding members — including Frederick Branch, Lucy Fitzgerald and Adriana O’Toole — all of whom are still active today, forty years later. Today the chapter is proud to have over 110 active members.

Monthly meetings were originally held at the Verona Public Library, members’ homes and the Munn Tavern in Montclair. ¬†Current meetings are held at the Montclair Women’s Club and also at other interesting sites for our annual Preservation Award and Garden Party meetings.
